The Rolling Stones took a kaleidoscopic detour with Their Satanic Majesties Request, a mind-control experiment gone haywire and then mellow; it was first released in December 1967 and is now reissued as a zoetrope edition for National Album Day. The band self-produced following Andrew Loog Oldham's departure, navigating a chaotic sessions period marked by staggered studio arrivals, drug-fueled experimentation, and legal distractions. The result blends Mellotron textures, African rhythms, strings, and studio effects into tracks that range from the whimsical harmonies of 'She's A Rainbow' to the riff-driven 'Citadel', the futuristic musings of '2000 Man', and Bill Wyman's sleep-caked 'In Another Land'. Notably, this was the first Stones album released in identical UK and US versions, its title cheekily referencing the British passport.
